This position is with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company—the second-largest U.S. tobacco company. The company's brands include Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.

The responsibility of this role is to manage and drive the successful development and delivery of consumer relevant Tobacco Heating Products (THP) within the RJR Tobacco NGP R&D organization.  The THP platform currently includes both Carbon Tipped (CTHP) and Electrical powered (ETHP) platforms.  The role will also involve extensive engagement with international clients and some international travel.  Development products will span both US market applications and international export projects. 


The role will lead the development and delivery of compliant products in full alignment to RJR / BAT NGPs strategy.  This will involve development of the products, sub-components, materials and knowledge required to deliver superior sensorial performance and consumer acceptability.


The Scientist must possess strong leadership skills. With minimal guidance, the scientist must be able to manage intra and inter-departmental project teams to execute product development projects against aggressive timelines. The individual must possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish collaborative relationships. He/she must be capable of utilizing sound scientific principles to provide innovative solutions to complex problems. Strong communication skills are required to interact effectively with peers, management and external vendors.


Principal Duties & Responsibilities include:

  • Design prototypes which meet market needs, interpret sensory and analytical test results using sound scientific principles.  A strong understanding of materials and their functionality. This role will need the ability to explain the differences of each product designs and how they function at a very technical level to their peers with the Domestic & International companies.
  • The ability to multi task numerous projects at the same time, under demanding timelines.
  • Collaborate cross functionally with various groups to develop new blends/components and new materials, insure product/process scale up and commercialization. Interact with outside vendors as necessary.
  • Insure internal business and regulatory process compliance in development, implementation of new/modified products, and maintenance of existing products.
  • Prepare data/information to support regulatory product submissions.
  • The Scientist must have the ability to learn our internal corporate processes.
  • Prepare and publish results/reports as required.


Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field such as Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, etc. and/or minimum of five years’ experience in a consumer products industry. Master’s degree in a technical field, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, etc. and/or minimum of three years’ experience in a consumer products industry.
  • Leadership and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage numerous, simultaneous complex projects.
  • Analytical and intuitive interpretation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team work skills.
  • Highly effective written/oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software.


Strongly Preferred:

  • Product development experience in a consumer products company.
  • Experience in a FDA regulated environment.
  • Ability to lead technical product meetings with our International and domestic colleagues.
