The mission of the Underwriter is to foster sound underwriting and business decisions, develop effective relationships and contribute toward the growth and development of the underwriting department in an effort to write and retain long term profitable business. Underwriters are expected to progress through the levels of the job family based on classroom training; on the job exposure; developing their analytical skills; independent decision making; effective communication, and leadership skills.
Risk Decisions: Apply sound, creative underwriting and business judgment in the timely analysis and evaluation of insurance risks to contribute to the growth and profitability of the organization.
Customer Service: Develop and maintain effective working relationships with assigned field personnel, producers, assigned policyholders and Home Office personnel through professional negotiation, responsive communication, problem resolution and anticipation of customer expectations.
Mentoring and Training: Provide mentoring and training as appropriate based on job level and experience.
Projects and Special Assignments: Actively participate in projects to contribute to corporate goals.
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Business and /or progressively responsible work experience with emphasis in individual disability insurance underwriting or similar analytical capacity.
Knowledge & Skills: Perform math calculations including the use of algebraic formulas; analyze detailed written information for accuracy and completeness; express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications, strong customer service and negotiation skills present and excellent time management skills. Demonstrated ability to make good decisions and then utilize negotiation skills to achieve overall desired result. Also, demonstrated ability to utilize customer service skills. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
Job Complexity & Judgment: Underwrites risk of moderate to more complex scope. Exercises independent judgment and discretion. Applies appropriate underwriting guidelines, procedures, contract provisions, state insurance statues. Requires analysis of data where answers are not readily obtained. Works within defined procedures to resolve non-standard issues. Makes recommendations for new processes or procedures.
Independence & Supervision Required: Typically receives general instructions on routine work. May require detailed instructions on new assignments. Work is often shared with team.
Interaction & Influence: Contacts include own department, interactions with field partners, Benefits, Marketing, Compliance, and occasional other external contacts to provide or obtain information. Effective team player and approver / mentor for lesser experienced personnel.
