Due to an upcoming retirement, we have an fantastic opportunity in our White Plains, New York office for a strategic leader to lead our eastern region's long term disability claims area,  while also serving as a senior site leader for other functional areas located at the site

 

As the Director of Long Term Disability, you’ll provide the overall direction for our group LTD claims operations and risk management for the eastern region.  You’ll also serve as the site leader for all functional areas within our White Plains office ensuring a positive working environment and that the facilities needs of our team members are being met.  People leadership and development will be a big focus of yours to ensure we are building and enhancing current and future leaders. You’ll also be responsible for the operational expense budget for the site.

 

You’ll be spending your efforts relationship building, creating connections, driving change and operational excellence. You’ll anticipate, assess and address individual and systemic challenges. To do this, you must have the passion and drive to stay on the cutting edge of customer experience, continuous improvement, and LTD practices.

  

You'll lead an LTD team of approximately 50 people to ensure  a positive customer experience, appropriate claims decisions and ongoing management of claims and reserve liability. You'll also serve as the senor site leader for all functional areas located at the site to ensure a great working environment and that other site needs are met.  You'll also have responsibility for an operational expense budget. 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Long Term Disability, you’ll provide operational, financial, and people leadership of a team of approximately 50.  You’ll have 4 – 5 direct reports who are people leaders.  

You’ll build strong credibility and effective and trusting relationships with your team and other stakeholders to ensure business needs are met through operational and technological advancements.

You’ll study trends and provide insightful data to share your insights with your peers to help drive appropriate strategic decisions.  

You proactively identify barriers to success and work with other leadership members to define and implement innovative solutions. You’ll identify areas of potential blind spots and put plans in place to remediate these.

You’ll keep abreast of market, legal and regulatory environments to ensure our disability programs, policies, and services maintain a competitive position in the marketplace.

You’ll collaborate with other groups to support the sales effort which may involve the hosting of sales team members and prospective customers for site visits and sales meetings.

Diverse and effective talent, leadership and technical capability across the business is critical, so you will partner with the leadership team and our HR partners to support the growth of this trend including leadership development, succession planning and performance coaching/management.

 

You’ll be instrumental in working with your colleagues to develop and implement disability management strategies and programs to result in cost-effective and appropriate intervention, rehabilitation and return to work outcomes, appropriate cost containment and account management for policyholders and claimants, identification of potentially fraudulent claims.  You’ll participate in formulating disability management guidelines and policies, goals and objectives. 

You’ll ensure your team meets business goals in claim decision accuracy, thorough investigations, reserve, payment and tax accuracy, appropriate pursuit and coordination of deductible income and overpayments, timely and appropriate application of policy provisions, timely communication, and reporting of claim data for insured and self-funded accounts.  You’ll ensure coordinated department activities with policyholders, the SIU, and other departments to meet claim and account management goals. 

You’ll ensure you have a fully trained staff capable of providing effective claim and account management and service, in a changing business and legal environment while also ensuring adequate staffing.

Work and negotiate effectively with Group and Individual Sales, Underwriting, Legal, QA, the SIU, other departments and state regulators to contribute to the sale and retention of business, product development and the company’s competitive position and reputation in the disability marketplace. 

As the senior site leader, you’ll coordinate activities of the White Plains office to ensure congruence with company image, culture, philosophy and processes.  You’ll also ensure effective facilities management, workplace safety, space management, furnishings and system performance and may be involved with local real estate and maintenance negotiations.

 

 

Qualifications

Education: Degree in business, science or medical related field or equivalent combination of work experience and education. 

Experience: a Minimum of five years of progressively responsible Long Term Disability benefit administration or claims experience; A minimum of 3 years of people leadeship experience with leading people leaders.   

Professional certification required: None

 

Advanced knowledge of: Managed disability and claim management principles and practices,  contract interpretation and application, ERISA, state laws and case law pertaining to disability claim administration.
